Question

In a competitive examination in Maharashtra state 9% candidates got selected from the total appeared candidates. Tripura state had an equal number of candidates appeared and 12% candidates got selected with 102 more candidates got selected than Maharashtra state. What was the number of candidates appeared from each state?

Let the total number of candidates who appeared from Maharashtra = x.

From Maharashtra, 9% of candidates got selected. Hence, the number of selected candidates from Maharashtra = 0.09x
Let the total number of candidates who appeared from Tripura = y.

From Tripura, 12% of candidates got selected. Hence, the number of selected candidates from Tripura = 0.12y
According to the problem, the number of selected candidates from Tripura is 102 more than those selected from Maharashtra. Hence, 0.12y=0.09x+102
Also, we are given that the number of candidates who appeared from both states is equal: x=y
Substitute y=x into the equation: 0.12x=0.09x+102 Simplify: 0.12x0.09x=102 0.03x=102 x=1020.03=3400
Thus, the number of candidates who appeared from both Maharashtra and Tripura is 3400

(1). Let total students were 100x. (2.)Then 9x got selected from Maharashtra. (3.) 12x got selected from Tripura. (4.) 12x = 9x + 102 => 3x = 102 => x = 34 (5.) So total students that is 100x = 34 * 100 = 3400

Let's denote the number of candidates appeared in Maharashtra state as "M" and the number of candidates appeared in Tripura state as "T." Given that 9% of the candidates got selected in Maharashtra state, we can calculate the number of selected candidates as (9/100) * M. In Tripura state, 12% of the candidates got selected, so the number of selected candidates in Tripura is (12/100) * T. We are also given that the number of selected candidates in Tripura state is 102 more than the number of selected candidates in Maharashtra state. Therefore, we can set up the following equation: (12/100) * T = (9/100) * M + 102 Simplifying the equation, we have: 12T = 9M + 10200 (multiplying both sides by 100 to remove the decimals) From the problem statement, we also know that the number of candidates appeared in Maharashtra state is the same as in Tripura state. So, we can set M = T. Substituting M = T in the equation above, we get: 12T = 9T + 10200 12T - 9T = 10200 3T = 10200 T = 10200/3 T = 3400 Therefore, the number of candidates appeared in Tripura state is 3400. Since M = T, the number of candidates appeared in Maharashtra state is also 3400. Hence, the number of candidates appeared in each state is 3400.
